Hotmail and Outlook

Hotmail was a free web-based email service launched in 1995 by Jack Smith and Sabeer Bhatia. Microsoft acquired it in 1997. By 2001, it had over 100 million users. In 2013, Microsoft transitioned Hotmail users to the new Outlook.com service while keeping their existing Hotmail addresses intact. The Hotmail name is derived from HTML (HyperText Markup Language).
